What this is for

  • Identify the active theme.
  • Activate a replacement theme.
  • Control updates and remove unused themes.

Before you start

  • Create a backup and test major theme changes on staging.
  • Record which theme is currently active so you can switch back.

Take care

Activating a theme changes the public site's layout immediately. Test it on staging and keep the previous active theme available for rollback.

Steps

    Create a backup and, where possible, test the theme on staging.

  2. 2

    Open Toolkit and choose Themes.

  3. 3

    Use Install to add a trusted theme or locate one already installed.

  4. 4

    Activate the intended theme and immediately review key page templates.

  5. 5

    Check menus, widgets, forms, mobile layouts and ecommerce templates.

  6. 6

    Keep a current default theme for recovery and remove other unused themes.

Check it worked

  • Toolkit marks the intended theme as Active.
  • Check key pages on desktop and mobile, including menus, forms, account pages and checkout where used.

What the controls do

Control What it means
Active The theme currently rendering the website.
Activate Switches the website to the selected theme.
Auto-updates Applies supported theme releases automatically.
