Create and verify a backup

Take a manual recovery point before upgrades, deployments and high-risk configuration changes.

Where Websites โ†’ your website โ†’ Backups

Enhance Backup now form and existing recovery point

What this is for

  • Create a labelled manual backup.
  • Confirm completion, size and time.
  • Keep a recovery point before change.

Before you start

  • Confirm the website and why the recovery point is needed.
  • Allow enough time and storage for the backup to complete before starting the risky change.

Take care

A backup is useful only if it completed successfully and can be restored. Do not rely on a pending or zero-size item.

Steps

  1. 1

Open Backups and select Backup now.

  2. 2

Add a note that identifies the reason, such as before plugin update or DNS cutover.

  3. 3

Start the backup and wait for a completed status.

  4. 4

Check the backup timestamp and ensure its size is plausible for the website.

  5. 5

Keep the recovery point until the change has been validated and the retention requirement is met.

Check it worked

  • The new backup shows a completed status, current timestamp and plausible non-zero size.
  • The note clearly identifies what change the backup was taken before.
