Add a domain, alias or subdomain

Choose whether a new address shares an existing website or has its own files.

Before you start

  • Register or control the domain separately. Adding it to cPanel does not purchase or transfer ownership of it.
  • Decide whether it should show the main site or a separate website. This affects the document-root choice.

Steps

    Open Domains and click Create A New Domain.

    Keep Registered Domain for a domain you own or a subdomain such as shop.example.com. Temporary Domain is a separate option for previewing a site before adding its final domain.

    If the address should show the main website, keep Share document root selected. For a separate website, untick it and inspect the Document Root field that appears. The page warns that sharing the document root is a permanent setting.

    Review the name and folder, then click Submit. Submit and Create Another saves this domain and keeps you in the creation workflow. Configure public DNS and a valid certificate separately.

    Enter the full domain or subdomain without https://, a slash or a page path.

    The shared document-root option makes the new address show the main site.

    For a separate site, choose its own directory under the account home. Do not reuse another live site’s directory by accident.

Check it worked

  • Find the domain in the list and confirm its Document Root.
  • After DNS and SSL are ready, open the domain and confirm it serves the intended website.
