Edit, copy, move or rename a file

Use the selected file’s toolbar actions without accidentally moving an entire website.

Before you start

  • Download or otherwise back up the original file before changing it.
  • Identify the exact file. Configuration files such as .htaccess can affect every page in a directory.

Steps

    Use View to inspect without editing, or Edit to open the text editor. Read any character-encoding prompt before continuing.

    Make only the required text change, then use the editor’s save control and close it. Use HTML Editor only when that editor is suitable for the file.

    Copy creates another copy; Move relocates the original. For either action, check the full destination path before confirming.

    Rename changes the name but does not update website links that point to it. Preserve the extension unless the application specifically requires a change.

    Open the correct directory and single-click the file to select it. Check that no unrelated items are selected.

    Select the file before using Copy, Move, Rename, Edit or View.

    For hidden files, open Settings at the top right, tick Show Hidden Files (dotfiles), and save. Return to the directory and refresh if needed.

    Show Hidden Files reveals dotfiles such as .htaccess.

Check it worked

  • Reload the file list and inspect the intended name or destination.
  • Test the affected page and any links to the file. If editing breaks the site, restore the backed-up version.
